One unexpected highlight was an opportunity to photograph Her Royal Highness Princess Anne, who is President of the Royal Yachting Association. A regular visitor to the boat show, Princess Anne made the trip to see her old friend Geoff Holt and his boat Impossible Dream, which the disabled yachtsman will sail solo across the Atlantic in December.

Both Ken and I enjoyed the whole Boat Show experience and, even if it turns out that I have not managed to capture any winning competition pictures, I certainly feel it was well worth doing.

“ANYTHING NAUTICAL”

by Sheila Brown

My husband, that old sea dog Ken, said he was thinking of going to the Southampton Boat Show and he asked if I would like to go with him. My heart sank because, to tell the truth, I am not that keen on boats. I was just preparing to say a polite ”No, thank you” when a bright light suddenly shone before my eyes and I remembered that the PCC set subject this season is “ANYTHING NAUTICAL”. Naturally, I agreed to go with him!

As I was my usual scruffy self (just suitable, I thought, for messing around boats), I was amazed at the number of smartly dressed young ladies trotting around in the highest of heels and wearing long flowing dresses. They seemed so incongruous in those surroundings but I soon understood why they had turned up like that because, as it was Ladies Day, there was a special competition to find the Best Dressed Lady. Photographers from the Daily Echo were roaming around looking for the most attractively dressed female, with the promise of some very special prizes, including a trip out on a powerboat and a lunch for four.
