Two Boys and a Red Arrow

By Mike Legg

In the early days of the Red Arrows, they used the Gnat trainers to fly for their displays.
On this particular Saturday my eldest son,who would have been about twelve and his close friend of the same age had planned to cycle down to the West Cliff at Bournemouth to see and photograph the Red Arrows. This of course appealed to my younger son, who was told by my older son that he was too young and would get in the way.

Off went the older boys ,with food and drinks for the day and Dads camera and zoom lens. This left a very long faced little boy who decided to go to his Boys Brigade Saturday Club as they were getting an expert along, possibly to talk about Football which was the usual thing.
The afternoon went by and about four thirty, a very excited little boy came running in the house,
Dad, Mum guess where I have been. Our leader at Boys Brigade, arranged a visit from the Red Arrows support team to come and give us a talk and because only eight of us turned up, they decided to take us in the mini bus over to Hurn.
In those days when expense was no object they used to send a Hercules and a spare Gnat to support the display aircraft.
They were taken up into the Hercules and shown all the controls and then in turn allowed to sit in the Gnat cockpit. Later they were brought back to the hall, full of excitement..
When the older boys came home and found out what had happened....Guess who then had the long faces.

George and Mark produce AV shows and many of you will remember they came to the club last season to give us a very entertaining and instructive evening on Natural History at Slop Bog.

Slop Bog can be found at West Moors. It is easily found by going on to Google Maps. Type in Slop Bog and you will get directions, and a lot of info is on the Net.

There is a board walk through the bog area, which leads on to a wooded area and there are made up paths to walk on. Many local people walk their dogs there. You may get the opportunity to photograph dragonflies/damselflies, lizards, butterflies, wildflowers, snakes, fungi - to name but a few…
On 19 July a small group of members from the Camera Club spent an enjoyable three hours with George and Mark Dunkling.

Both George and his son Mark are very well known for their knowledge and expertise in photographing Natural History subjects. Much of this can be seen on “Flickr” web site under groups, Slop Bog. Mark goes under the name “Dorsetdunk”. Two pictures of the PCC Group were taken by him using HDR technique.
